UPDATE: The Kent County Sheriff’s Office is no longer investigating an alleged attempted abduction Parkbrook and Division in Gaines Township.

Kent County Undersheriff Michelle Young told WZZM 13 that the girl admitted that she made up the story so that she wouldn't get in trouble for missing the school bus.

ORIGINAL STORY: The Kent County Sheriff’s Department is warning parents to be on the lookout after an attempted abduction Tuesday morning.

A 10-year-old girl was waiting for her school bus to arrive in Gaines Township around 7:40 a.m. Police say she was playing in a nearby creek while waiting when she said that a middle-aged man drove up wearing a mask. The man reportedly forced the girl into a while pickup truck.

The girl told police that he drove her around in his truck for about an hour before she was able to escape, according to a release.  She says she escaped near the McDonald’s on 68th Street, near US-131, and ran home.

After the girl got back to her home her mother called police.

Investigators are reviewing surveillance cameras in the area and are continuing to speak with the victim.
