Yesterday was national dog day, and it’s pretty evident we all love our pooches. In fact, according to a recent survey by PoochPerks.com, more than a third of us love our dogs more than our significant others. Ouch.

And potential mates may want to make sure they are kissing up to the pooch, because a whopping 94 percent of Americans say it’s important that their dog likes their significant other. What’s more, 71 percent say it would cause major relationship problems if their potential mates didn’t like, or couldn’t get along with, their dog, while 43 percent say not getting along with their dog would be a deal breaker and the relationship would be over before it even began.

Because when it comes right down to it, we love our dogs more than people. Don’t believe us? Well, 80 percent of those polled actually admitted they like dogs better than other people, and 20 percent say they trust their dogs more than their partners.

And we are certainly more attached to our pets than our mates. Asked to rate on a scale of one to ten how devastated they’d be if their dog ran away, the average number was nine-point one. But when asked how upset they’d be if their partner broke up with them, the average was only eight-point-eight.

Well, dogs do give you unconditional love, partners there are always conditions.

Do you think you love your dog more than people? Would you break up with someone if they didn’t like your dog? Did you? What if your dog didn’t like the person?
