Finance website Wallethub has ranked Ann Arbor the No.1 college town in America...

Well, in the "small city" (fewer than 125,000 people) category anyway.

WalletHub compared more than 400 cities based on 30 indicators of academic, social, and economic growth potential. They looked at things like cost of living, quality of higher education, student loan levels, and crime rate.

Here are Wallethub's rankings based on city size:

Best Small College Cities

  1. Ann Arbor
  2. Provo, UT
  3. Rexburg, ID
  4. Stevens Point, WI
  5. West Lafayette, IN

Best Midsize College Cities

  1. Orlando, FL
  2. Scottsdale, AZ
  3. Gainesville, FL
  4. Salt Lake City, UT
  5. Madison, WI

Best Large College Cities

  1. Austin, TX
  2. Tampa, FL
  3. Las Vegas, NV
  4. Seattle, WA
  5. Los Angeles, CA

So where did East Lansing end up? Just edged out of the Top 10 for small cities, coming in at No. 11.

Grand Rapids came in at No. 36 for mid-size cities (125,000 to 300,000 people).

Detroit ranked second to last (63rd out of 64) for large cities (more than 300,000 people).
