As the skin continues to come off our buildings at 50 Monroe NW and 37 Ottawa NW, we continue to learn more about its history.

A post this weekend to the Grand Rapids History 1960 And Before page on Facebook revealed a photo of the 37 Ottawa building building when it was the 'Leonard Cleanable Refrigerator Factory'. This photo reveals the best look yet at the original facade, which has since been destroyed, causing a bit of consternation to the restorers.

The post was originally published by GR resident David Britten on his Facebook feed.

In the comments section, it was revealed that Charles Hemen Leonard owned the factory, and I have to assume he is the namesake of Leonard Street, because before him, our food rotted in the pantry.
