The Mars One Foundation is aiming to establish a permanent human settlement on Mars in 2023 and is currently accepting applications from those interested in being among the first people to visit the planet.

If selected, you will receive years of survival training and eventually a one-way ticket to Mars.  They can get you there, but the technology to bring you back doesn't exist so once you're gone, you're gone.  As of last month, 78,000 people have registered for the move to Mars.  If you're ready to trade an Earth lifestyle for one of the Mars variety, CLICK HERE TO APPLY.  The astronaut application period ends August 31st, 2013.

The total cost of getting the first 4 people to Mars will be about 6 billion dollars and this is how we will finance it, we will have the world watch how humans fly to Mars, how they land on Mars, what life on Mars will be like, we want the world to elect the envoys of mankind to the next planet.  The final vote will be given to the audience.  I think that reality TV from Mars will be completely different from reality TV from Earth because reality TV from Mars is inherently interesting.  Telling the story of the biggest adventure of mankind to the world will be our way of financing it.  - Bas Lansdorp, Co-Founder and CEO of Mars One

I'm happy to spend the rest of my life here on Earth, but I'd definitely sit on my couch and watch the Mars people on TV.  - Shaffee
