Grand Haven Cross that Drew Criticism Will Become an Anchor

Grand Haven city officials have approved plans to convert a 48-foot-tall cross on city-owned property overlooking the Grand River into an anchor.

The Muskegon Chronicle reports that the Grand Haven City Council approved a resolution Monday on a 3-2 vote to limit access to the Dewey Hill property as well as change the cross, which had faced criticism from local residents and a religious organization.

Lake Superior State –- the smallest public university in Michigan -- has released its annual list of banished words.

The list’s proper name is the List of Words Banished from the Queen’s English for Mis-Use, Over-Use and General Uselessness, and has been a Lake Superior tradition since 1976.

Michigan Senate OKs Setting Drunk Boating, Snowmobiling Limits at 0.08 Percent BAC

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to sign bills soon that will subject boaters and snowmobilers to the same blood-alcohol limits as motor vehicle drivers.

The bills approved unanimously Tuesday by the state Senate would set the legal alcohol limit at 0.08 percent blood-alcohol content (BAC) instead of 0.10 percent BAC.

Michigan Senate Approves 4 A.M. Closing Time for Downtown Bars

Michigan cities may have the option of allowing downtown bars to stay open until 4 a.m. on weekend nights under a new bill that passed the Michigan Senate on Thursday.
