Reissue of Beatles’ ‘Hard Day’s Night’ Film to Include Extras

United Artists

More information about a forthcoming deluxe reissue of ‘Hard Day’s Night’ is beginning to emerge: The Beatles’ motion picture debut will be receiving a complete digital restoration, overseen by original director Richard Lester.

This new edition is set for release on June 24 via Criterion. The single-disc DVD edition will list for $19.95. A dual-format (Blu-ray/DVD) three-disc set, which includes separate audio options for mono or a 5.1 surround mix, is priced at $39.95.

Filming for ‘Hard Day’s Night’ commenced just a month after the Beatles’ celebrated U.S. debut on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show,’ with Beatlemania at a fever pitch. The era is further explored through two separate documentary items packaged in the dual-format edition: ‘In Their Own Voices’ includes interviews with the Beatles from 1964, along with behind-the-scenes footage and photos. Meanwhile, 1994′s ‘You Can’t Do That: The Making of ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ explores the film’s origins, as compiled by producer Walter Shenson.

The expanded edition will also feature several items focusing on Lester, including a 2002 documentary called ‘Things They Said Today,’ a new feature on the director’s early work and another on his editing techniques. Longtime Beatles producer George Martin is interviewed as part of ‘Things They Said Today,’ as well. There are additional deleted scenes, along with a new talk with Mark Lewisohn, author of ‘Tune In: The Beatles – All These Years.’

Among the early classics featured in the original 87-minute black-and-white movie, which follows a fictionalized day in the life of the Beatles as they prepare for a television concert appearance, are ‘Can’t Buy Me Love,’ ‘I Should Have Known Better,’ the title track and others.
