Your commute may become a bit more challenging after the holiday weekend.

A major construction project on U.S. 131 through downtown Grand Rapids begins on Monday, July 7.

The MDOT project will make improvements to bridges on U.S. 131, including southbound over Bridge Street, southbound over the Grand River and Market Avenue and the northbound and southbound bridges from Wealthy Street to Grandville Avenue.

Some detours will be necessary as the ramps from eastbound and westbound I-196 to southbound U.S. 131 will be closed for most of the project.

The ramps at Pearl, Market, Cherry and Wealthy will also be closed at times.

Two lanes will remain open on southbound U.S. 131 for most of the project.

All lanes will be open on northbound U.S. 131 from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m.

There will be nightly double-lane closures on northbound and southbound 131 between Wealthy Street and Grandville Avenue.

The project is scheduled to run through Aug. 28.

Good luck.
