Billy Joel gave the commencement address at Stony Brook University on Long Island this past Friday, telling students that if they’re not doing what they love then they are simply wasting their time.

Other notables honoring graduates were Robert DeNiro and Jack Black.

Joel told graduates that he knew from a young age that he wanted to be a musician and admitted he’s “one of the lucky ones” as he received an honorary doctor of music degree.

He urged the graduates to spend their lives doing what they loved, and hoped they had the stamina to do it no matter what resistance they encounter.

Robert DeNiro was far more animated in his salute to graduates at the Tisch School of the Arts at New York University, he dropped the F-bomb, jokingly advised the students to take Vicodin and said he'd never let his kids go to NYU.

Jack Black, meanwhile told the graduating seniors at Monteverde Academy in Florida to avoid college because he "slept through it".
