Jon Bon Jovi is a Jersey boy. He grew up not far from Toms River, and when he heard the town's citizens were having a hard go of it, he pitched in to help.

Jon and his wife,Dorothea Bongiovi, have teamed up with local charities and fellow philanthropists to open a hunger center in Toms River hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

The B.E.A.T. Center, which stands for Bringing Everyone All Together, is now open in Toms River, New Jersey and includes the second JBJ Soul Kitchen restaurant, where those in need can do volunteer work for their meals, and paying customers donate toward the cost of the volunteers' food. The first restaurant opened in Red Bank, New Jersey back in 2011.

The need for a B.E.A.T. Center came before Sandy, however. In Ocean County, where Toms River is located, one in five residents is low-income or lives in poverty. "This is happening across our nation," Bon Jovi said. "When there's 15% of children going to be hungry at night in a nation like ours, that's not an issue it takes a scientist to solve."
