Bruce Springsteen, Roger Waters to ‘Stand Up for Heroes’

Two rock legends will lend their time for a good cause next week. Roger Waters and Bruce Springsteen will perform at the 6th annual ‘Stand Up for Heroes’ concert, a night of music and comedy that will take place Nov. 8 at the Beacon Theatre in New York.

The show is a benefit for the Bob Woodruff Foundation, which was founded by the ABC News anchor after being severly wounded while covering the war in Iraq in 2006. The Foundation’s mission is to “provide resources and support to injured service members, veterans and their families — building a movement to empower communities nationwide to take action to successfully reintegrate our nation’s injured heroes—especially those who have sustained the Hidden Injuries of War—back into their communities so they may thrive physically, psychologically, socially and economically.”

For all the seriousness of the subject matter, the evening will not be short on laughs. Comedians Jon Stewart, Robin Williams, Ricky Gervais, Patton Oswalt and Mike Birbiglia will perform routines. The bill also features John Mayer, and the Max Weinberg Big Band will serve as the house band for the night.

Springsteen has played at all five previous Stand Up for Heroes fundraisers, where he usually winds up telling (badly) a dirty joke. Last year’s benefit raised nearly $400,000 from the auction, with one patron spending $160,000 for the Springsteen’s acoustic guitar, shirt, harmonica and harmonica rack from the evening. The anonymous bidder then gave the guitar to a veteran who lost his legs in Iraq.
