If you want job security in the future, the sky may be the place for you. A new mandatory retirement age, and tougher certification requirements have left a huge deficit of airline pilots in the world, and it's not getting better.

So, if you learn to fly, you may have a good job for years to come.

The shortage is already hitting regional carriers and is expected to spread, says Capt. Steve Jones, director of flight operations at the WMU College of Aviation.

Mayor’s 100 Campaign Works to Increase Grand Rapids’ Youth Employment [Video]

The Mayor's 100 Campaign is under way, with its goal to increase employment among Grand Rapids' youth.

A big part of the effort is the Leadership and Employment, Achievement and Direction (LEAD) pre-employment training program, which seeks to increase meaningful employment among 15- to 24-year-olds in Grand Rapids. After training is completed, participants are eligible for employment with a Mayor's 100 Campaign business.

This year, The Kalamazoo Promise -- a program where anonymous donors put college education within the reach of every child in Kalamazoo Public Schools -- is celebrating a decade and the fact it has handed out nearly 4,000 scholarships in the past 10 years.

Because of the Kalamazoo Promise, graduates of Kalamazoo Public Schools can count on full-tuition scholarships to any community college, public university or, new this year, a select group of private colleges in Michigan.

Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s Butterfly Exhibition Opens March 1

Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park’s annual Butterflies Are Blooming exhibition opens March 1 and runs through April 30.

Butterflies Are Blooming will mark 20 years by bringing more than 7,000 tropical butterflies to West Michigan.

More than 170,000 people visit the exhibit each year, Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park officials said.
