Drive-By Compliments, Part 2 [Video]

In a world becoming grumpier and crankier by the day, Blake Grigsby and his friends jumped in their cars to yell nice things at people. And, as usual, people don't know how to react to a drive-by compliment.

The Only Way To See Fireworks Is In The Middle of Them [Video]

Drone cameras can be overrated. I mean, how many times can you see a college campus from the air before it just gets boring.

But when you send a drone with a camera attached up into THE MIDDLE of a fireworks display, that's different. There is suspense (the camera could get blown apart at any moment) and there is thrills (shells knocking the camera for a loop).

Enjoy.

U.S. Army Spec. Mitchell Oliver is currently back home in Greenville, spending a 17-day leave that includes the Independence Day weekend thanks to an unexpected assist.

The 20-year-old soldier flew home June 21 to heartwarmingly -- and unsuspectingly for his mother -- see his parents, Deann and Gary Oliver, at Gerald R. Ford International Airport. He arrived with a welcoming reception from Blue Star Mothers of America and Patriot Guard Riders.

Give Blood, Get A T-Shirt [Audio]

Summer blood supplies generally run low, mainly because many regular donors are on vacation. That's where YOU step up, and fill in the gap.

And now is the time to step up, and get a pretty cool T-shirt for doing so.

Army Spec. Mitchell Oliver Returns to Hometown of Greenville Through Fly A Soldier Home This Summer [Photos]

Deann Oliver greeted an unexpected soldier Saturday.

In helping welcome home returning U.S. military personnel at Gerald R. Ford International Airport, she was doing a supportive shift with fellow Blue Star Mothers of America members and Patriot Guard Riders. A handful of families had already been reunited with loved ones when her eyes fell on someone she wasn’t expecting to see until at least next week: U.S. Army Spec. Mitch Oliver. It was her son.

Deann shrieked with delight, clutching into her knees just beyond Gate B as others in two greeting lines, many holding and waving American flags, clapped, smiled and cried tears of joy. Also beaming was Mitch, who had a bouquet of red roses for his mother snuck to him by his father, Gary Oliver.

He was flown in through Fly A Soldier Home This Summer, a contest sponsored by Ed Koehn Automotive Group in conjunction with Classic Hits 98.7 WFGR and affiliated stations 97.9 WGRD, Channel 95.7 (WLHT), 100.5 The River (WTRV) and 1410 AM The Touch (WNWZ).

For Father’s Day: Never Grow Up, Never Give Up

For the first time since my oldest was born, all three of my daughters will be away from home for Father's Day.

That's not a bad thing. I wanted them to grow up independent, and live life to the fullest, and that's what they're doing, and that's the best gift I could ever ask for.

I wrote the following essay last year when my oldest, who lives in Los Angeles now, graduated from college, and I thought I'd share it with you.

Two Michigan Spellers Advance To National Spelling Bee Semi-Finals

I'm a geek for the National Spelling Bee, the finals of which air in prime time tonight on ESPN.   I love it for its simplicity; a kid stands up, is given a word, and they can either spell or they can't.

Two of the semi-finalists battling for a spot on tonight's show are from Michigan.  Go Hannah!  Go Neha!

My Interview With Maya Angelou [Video]

In 2009, I had the opportunity to interview Maya Angelou. Like most Americans, I only had vague knowledge of her body of work, but over the course of the interview, she exhibited a dignity and charm that won me over.  I wish I had a Grandmother as wise as her.

Maya passed away this week at the age of 86, and in this interview, she reveals what she wants to be remembered for, and her answer is beautiful.
