Meijer Keeps Getting Bigger

Our little own Meijer is about to go over 200 stores, and expand into it's 6th State.  Wisconsin is next up.   Hard to believe that the little store that started in Greenville now finds itself in 6 states and over 200 stores.  This is important, because let's remember, Meijer is headquartered here, and the Meijer family has given so much back to this community over the years.  We should feel proud of out "little Meijer" stores...    And even better - The Purple Cow is coming back!

Big Rapids Opens Racist Museum

This is crazy, and it's even in our own back yard - Big Rapids.

This place is loaded simple ashtrays and fishing lures, a full-size replica of a lynching tree. But all are united by a common theme: They are steeped in racism so intense it makes you blush!

Uh-Oh Uncle Teddly! Nuge Might Be In Trouble For Shooting…His Mouth Off!

Ted Nugent, Michigan's "Mouth of the South" might be in heat with the fuzz. Uncle Ted starting yapping about President Obama, and now the Secret Service wants to talk to the bow-shooting rocker. Now, granted the Secret Service is taking it's lumps these days, they still are charged with protecting the life of the President. They take threats like "If Barack Obama becomes the president in November, again, I will either be dead or in jail by this time next year. We need to ride into that battlefield and chop their heads off in November. Any questions?"

“Finding Bigfoot” in Michigan

Animal Planet's "Finding Bigfoot" had me hooked with one commercial--  one of the show's "bigfoot hunters" whispers, "I do think there's a 'squatch in these woods..." all Blair Witch Project-y into the camera. ( "Squatch" being short for "sasquatch"-- of course.) If you're not familiar with the show, as you might have guessed, it centers around the search for the mystical creature known as "Bigfoot" in cites and towns across the US. Apparently there have been some  "sightings" here in Michigan, because "Finding Bigfoot" just wrapped shooting in areas around Gladwin State Forest, Houghton Lake, and West Branch.

Riders What Do You Think? New Helmet Law Signed By Gov. Synder

So today it happened. Gov Synder signed a bill that would allow motorcycle operators 21 or older to ride without a helmet. The Riders will need at least $20,000 in insurance to ride in the state sans helmet. Groups who supported the bill are overjoyed. They felt Michigan lost millions of dollars to other states where people can ride with no helmet. People who opposed the bill feel more money will be needed for insurance and injuries.

Tigers, Whitecaps Opening Day!

Not much else is like baseball opening day here in Michigan. I have a couple personal Opening Day stories, but first, I start with the late Ernie Harwell's Ode to Spring. He would always read the Song of Solomon 2:11-12 before the first Spring Training game every year. Even though it's Opening Day, it still is fitting and is part of the lore of Baseball in America.

Meijer Launches Purple Cow Dairy!

Three of my earliest memories as a kid was A) the Nixon two dollar bill my Dad kept in his wallet. Freaked me out, even at a young age! B) Riding Sandy the penny pony at Meijer, and C) Getting an ice cream cone at the Purple Cow! Some newer Meijer stores don't have the iconic West Michigan Dairy treat anymore, but that will soon change! The Purple Cow is coming back!
