Famous Film and TV Geeks, Then and Now

History has always portrayed being geeky as an immense, life-crippling negative experience (at least in high school). However, today, the term "nerd" or "geek" appears to have morphed into a new meaning: one of power, intelligence and, believe it or not, popularity.

With powerhouses such as the Nerdist network, Apple's Steve Jobs, Microsoft's Bill Gates and pretty much every hipster reading a graphic novel through his or her oversized novelty glasses, geeks are on top of their game today.

Weekend Box Office Report: ‘Lone Survivor’ Screens as Lone Victor

New releases have a habit of floundering in January, which tends to be one of Hollywood's biggest dumping grounds.

Even this year's big January horror release, which is commonly a sure thing, floundered.

What does tend to do well are the prestige pictures which opened late in the previous year (often in limited release) and expand in the new year, riding awards momentum to solid box-office receipts.

Peter Berg's "Lone Survivor" emerged from limited release last week to rise at the box office.
