If you follow Michigan football, you've known about 5-year-old Chad Carr, the grandson of former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr, and his ongoing battle with brain cancer.

The little guy, who had won the support of both the Michigan players and their rivals, passed away yesterday. The Michigan community is in mourning.

Michigan players had been writing the words #ChadTough across the back of their helmets since learning of the diagnosis last year.

Lloyd Carr coached at Michigan from 1995 until 2007, winning the national championship in 1997. Chad's dad, Jason, played quarterback for the Wolverines.

The boy's Michigan roots were deep on both sides, as his mother, Tammi, is the daughter of former Wolverines safety Tommy Curtis, who played for Bo Schembechler in the late '60s in Ann Arbor. He intercepted two passes in Michigan's fabled 24-12 upset of top ranked Ohio State in 1969, Bo's first year in Ann Arbor.

Fans on the Michigan sub-reddit published a touching photo from Chad's father, and also offered an outpouring of grief.

Here's Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh addressing the feelings of the University in the wake of Chad's death.

As did Michigan basketball coach, John Beilein.
