I went 5-1 with my predictions last week and I owe a debt of gratitude to a Western Michigan player who tried real hard to make my record perfect.

It's on to week two, where I throw in a Division III game to make up for Sparty taking the week off.

The only game I missed last week was Western's narrow 22-21 win over Northwestern. Devonte Ginwright of Western, knowing I was just a few scant seconds away from a perfect record, tried real hard to lose the game by tossing a fumble back into the field of play, which was recovered by Northwestern for what appeared to be the winning touchdown. The refs, however, ruled that Ginwright stepped out of bounds, sealing the win for the Broncos. I think they were wrong, check it out:

Stupid refs!!

On to week two of my state college football predictions...

Central Florida (1-0) at Michigan (1-0) -- Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, 12 noon Saturday

Michigan got to play everybody last week in its 63-3 thrashing of a jet lagged Hawaii team. UCF's offense offers a little more challenge for M's suffocating defense having put up 38 points last week against South Carolina State, but don't look for this one to be close, just less of a blow out.

Michigan State -- The Spartans have the week off before taking on Notre Dame next week.

North Carolina Central (0-1) at Western Michigan (1-0) -- Waldo Stadium, Kalamazoo, 7pm Saturday

The Broncos have a really good shot a going undefeated following their upset win at Northwestern. Their offense controlled the ball for nearly 40 minutes against a pretty good Wildcat defense. QB Zach Terrell tossed for 218 yards, and receiver Corey Davis now has his own web page touting him as a Heisman Trophy candidate. NC Central will offer little in the way of resistence this week.

Central Michigan (1-0) at Oklahoma State (1-0) -- Boone Pickens Stadium, Stillwater OK, Saturday 12 noon.

Central took a while to get untracked last week in an easy win over Presbyterian last week, which scares me going into this showdown with the 22nd ranked Cowboys. If they start slow again, it could be a long afternoon. The Chips are going to need another big game from running back Devon Spalding to give QB Cooper Rush some needed time to throw.

Ferris State (1-0) at Michigan Tech (1-0) -- Sherman Field, Houghton, Saturday 1pm.

This may be a tussle for the Bulldogs as both teams notched big league wins to open the season. Ferris whipped a pretty good Ohio Dominican team, 45-0, while Tech topped Walsh, 33-7. While the Huskies are definitely improved, I don't think they canmathc Ferris' team speed. This will be a great road test for the Bulldogs, but with new QB Reggie Bell off to a great start, they should have no trouble nothcing their 27th straight regualr season win.

FSU 33, Tech 14

Lake Erie (0-1) at Grand Valley State (1-0) -- Lubbers Stadium, Allendale, Saturday 7pm.

Grand Valley's offense looked in mid-season form in their opening rout of Tiffin, 45-7. Lake Erie, meanwhile, lost in OT at home to a pretty good Northern Michigan team, 38-35. The Storm's only chance against the Lakers would be if they can open up a passing game, to stymie Laker LB David Talley and the rest of the Laker D from shutting down their vaunted running attack. That won't happen. The Lakers ride the Storm out. (See what I did there?)

BONUS PICK: Hope College 22, Defiance 17 (just to make it six games even)
