Police testified that Grant Taylor said that he was angry with firefighters who were collecting donations and slowing down traffic before he hit a firefighter with his pickup truck on September 9.

The Lansing State Journal reports that Taylor honked his horn and threw an apple core at Lansing Firefighter Dennis Rodeman then drove away, turned around, and struck Rodeman with his vehicle, according testimony from a Lansing police detective.

The 22-year-old Lansing resident has a history of mental illness and has been charged with murder in this case.

According to court documents, Taylor admitted to hitting Rodeman with his vehicle, but did not say it was an accident, nor did he admit to it being intentional.

Taylor’s mother had petitioned the Ingham County Probate Court twice in the past two years to involuntarily hospitalize her son for mental health reasons, according to reports.
