Detroit Tigers star Victor Martinez re-injured his left knee last week and could be out for a while.

Martinez tore his medial meniscus during offseason workouts last week, the team announced on Thursday. This is the same knee that Martinez suffered a microfracture and torn ACL in three years ago, which caused him to miss the entire 2012 season.

The 36-year-old Martinez is scheduled to undergo surgery next week, according to the Tigers. Ostensibly, this injury is not as serious as the one from 2102. However, recovery times vary for such an injury, and rehabilitation will likely be necessary and in most cases limits stresses such as running for several months.

Martinez hit .335 for a career-best 32 home runs and 103 RBI. Playing DH for the Tigers, he figured to bat fourth behind Miguel Cabrera again.

If Martinez's absence is extended, the Tigers could make a move to replace his production in the lineup.

Detroit just signed Martinez to a four-year, $68 million deal this offseason. He finished second in the AL MVP voting last season.
