West Michigan residents have been told to not to be afraid of the black bears roaming their neighborhoods.

It's just that that advice is easier said than done, because when a black bear is staring you down with his stinky breath, it's hard not to be a little bit frightened.

Several people between Spring Lake and Nunica have reported seeing a pretty good sized black bear raiding their bird feeders and garbage cans for food.

The bear, probably awakened from his winter slumber by last week's spate of warm weather is hungry and looking for food, and is looking for an easy fix to his problem.

The DNR says people shouldn't fear the bears, because they will most likely run off if confronted. Still, it may be a good idea to remove feeders and store grills and trash cans when not in use, to avoid bears getting close to your home or pets.

The DNR will not intervene with a bear unless it becomes a recurring safety issue.
