Drivers Avoiding 28th Street Traffic…And Getting Tickets

photos by blperk, flickr

A major construction project on 28th Street has begun. The project is not expected to be done until November 22.

Some drivers are growing impatient, taking shortcuts, and getting tickets.

An already busy area + a major construction project = one big headache.

What’s the reason for all of the construction?

Michigan.gov explains:

M-11 will be resurfaced from Breton Avenue east to Patterson Avenue, and reconstructed from Patterson Avenue east to I-96. Work also includes the addition of a right-turn lane for northbound Patterson Avenue, traffic signal upgrades, and new sidewalk and lighting from Patterson Avenue east to I-96.

The construction project runs near Home Depot in Kentwood.  Some drivers have been taking shortcuts through Home Depot’s parking lot to avoid the slowdown at 28th Street and Patterson.  Police have been writing $125 tickets to those drivers.  WZZM.com explains:

“They were using it as a cut-through,” explains Home Depot assistant manager Mike Morrissey. “Our concern is for the safety of everyone who shops at the store. We needed to stop the flow of traffic across the front of the building.”

With the help of the Michigan Department of Transportation, Home Depot installed additional stop signs and barriers to discourage drivers from cutting through.

Kentwood Police are also patrolling the lot and writing tickets when they catch people trying to bypass the traffic signal.

If you’re regularly traveling 28th Street this summer…good luck.
