The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development reports that Earl’s Meats in Holland is recalling its turkey lunch meat because a sample has tested positive for Listeria monocytogenes.

The recalled turkey lunch meat was sold from the retail cooler at Earl’s Meats in Holland and is marked with a sell-by date range between Feb. 24, 2015 and March 3, 2015.

Illnesses have not been reported to date in connection with this problem.

The contamination was noted after testing by the state showed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes in a sample of the product.

Production of the product has been suspended while Earl’s Meats and the state continue their investigation into the source of the problem.

Consumers who have purchased the turkey lunch meat are urged to return it to the retail store at A 5685 143rd Avenue in Holland for a full refund.

Consumers with questions may contact Earl's Meats owner Earl Bosch at (616) 392-6392.

Consumption of food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, an uncommon but potentially fatal disease. Listeriosis can cause high fever, severe headache, neck stiffness, and nausea. Listeriosis can also cause miscarriages and stillbirths. The very young, the pregnant, the elderly, and persons with compromised immune systems are the most susceptible to infection. People experiencing these problems should seek immediate medical attention.
