It’s official, Elton John got pranked. As we told you yesterday, Elton claimed he received a phone call from Russian president Vladimir Putin, when reps for Putin denied he ever made the call. Well, we now know who was on the other end of the line chatting with Elton.

The Associated Press in Moscow has identified the callers as Russian pranksters Vladimir "Vovan" Krasnov and Alexei "Lexus" Stolyarov. The pair told a Russian newspaper they called Elton Tuesday claiming to be Putin and his spokesman Dmitry Peskov. They later released the audio of the call.

So far there’s no word from Elton about the prank, but Peskov isn’t exactly happy about it. He says the hoax “was not nice” and he wants the two men to apologize to Elton, calling him “a much respected and loved performer over here.”

While the call is a great prank, the Russian duo doesn't get many (if any) funny lines or premises into the call, leaving me a wee bit disappointed by the whole thing.
