The Eagles are bringing their high-powered dog-and-pony show, titled "The History of the Eagles" to Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids tonight.

Comprised currently of vocalist-drummer Don Henley, vocalist-guitarist Glenn Frey, guitarist-vocalist Joe Walsh and bassist-vocalist Timothy B. Schmit, the band had five No. 1 singles and six No. 1 albums.

Here's five things you may not know about the band.

  1. The Eagles sold the most albums of any American band in the 1970s. The Eagles' album, "Their Greatest Hits 1971-1975," was named the best-selling album of the 20th century with 26 million sold. Also, its album, "Hotel California," was ranked among the 10 all-time best-selling albums by the Recording Industry Association of America.
  2. The Eagles got their start with the help of Linda Ronstadt. The Eagles began in early 1971, when  Ronstadt and then-manager John Boylan recruited session musicians Glenn Frey and Don Henley. Formed in Los Angeles, Boylan assembled them as Ronstadt's backup band for her 1970 album "Silk Purse." Henley was in Los Angeles with his band, Shiloh, and Frey had formed Longbranch Pennywhistle. They met in 1970 at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, and got acquainted through their record label, Amos Records.
  3. The band has Michigan ties. Glenn Frey was born in Detroit. One of Frey's first bands, The Four of Us, had its first single written by ... Bob Seger.
  4. Frey and Timothy B. Schmit sand back up and played instruments on Randy Newman's "Short People." That's fitting for Frey, who is only 5 feet, 4 inches tall.
  5. The Eagles have won six Grammys, including Best Pop Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus (for "Lyin' Eyes") Best Rock Vocal performance by a Duo or Group ("Heartache Tonight") and Best Country Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals (in 2008 with "How Long").
