‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ Theme Prompts School Lockdown

Wow. So many people should be so embarrassed. Except, of course, for the Fresh Prince — he’s too fresh to be embarrassed. After mishearing the lyrics to the theme from ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air,’ a receptionist called the police about a potential mass school shooting. Chaos ensued.

The receptionist was calling Ambridge Area High School student Travis Clawson to remind him about an appointment with his eye doctor. Clawson, in a moment of brilliance, had recorded himself singing the ‘Fresh Prince’s’ theme as his voicemail message. The receptionist thought Clawson was rapping that he was going to be “shooting some people outside of the school,” (why anyone would sing about that is a mystery to us) instead of “shooting some b-ball outside of the school” as per The Fresh Prince rap. Thinking she had just heard somebody confess they were going to go on a shooting spree, she called the police.

The police contacted Clawson’s school, but since his exact whereabouts weren’t immediately known, a countywide school lockdown was initiated. Clawson was ultimately found at the office of his school’s guidance counselor, which was swarmed, and the 19-year-old was taken into custody, where he had to convince police that he was saying “b-ball” and not “people.”

Clawson was eventually released, and now has to go back to school, and face peers who now know about his sloppy diction. His family has met with an attorney, because “an innocent young man was embarrassed.” Will the humiliation never end for this kid?
