Frozen Strawberries Linked To Hepatitis A Recalled In West Mi

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a recall on frozen strawberries sold around the US.

The recall comes after the CDC and FDA found that the strawberries tested positive for Hepatitis A.  The strawberries in question, come from Egypt.  While they were sold in stores in a few states, it appears any of the possibly tainted strawberries that are in Michigan were sold to restaurants.

According to WZZM, these are the restaurants that received the recalled strawberries:

A Kent County Health Department new release confirmed that two facilities in Kent County have served contaminated strawberries in the last two weeks:

 

• Romano’s Macaroni Grill, 5525 28th Street, Grand Rapids, MI
• HCR ManorCare Grand Rapids, 2320 E Beltline SE, Grand Rapids

The Ottawa County Health Department also confirmed in a news release that the following established received and served contaminated strawberries in the last two weeks:

 

• 8th Street Grille, 20 W 8th St, Holland (strawberry shakes)

• Biggby Coffee #323, 7589 Cottonwood Dr, Ste E, Jenison (smoothies with strawberries)

• Biggby Coffee #425, 510 W Savidge, Spring Lake (smoothies with strawberries)

• Holiday Inn Grand Haven, 940 W Savidge St, Spring Lake (strawberry vinaigrette)

• Jackie’s Place, 451 W 17th St, Holland, (strawberry sauce on pancakes)

So far, no illnesses have been reported here in Michigan, but nine states have illnesses reported, associated with the strawberries recalled.  Virginia has the largest number of cases reported at 107.

Adam London, a Kent County Health Deparment Health Officer told WZZM:

“If you have eaten an item containing strawberries at Macaroni Grill or HRC ManorCare on the Beltline in the last 14 days, you should receive either the Hepatitis A vaccination as soon as possible to try to prevent the illness.”
