Fred Meijer, a pioneer of supercenter retailing and respected philanthropist, died Friday in Grand Rapids after suffering a stroke in his home in the early morning hours. He was 91.

The public is invited to pay tribute to Fred at Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park this Tuesday, November 29th.  The visitation service will held from 2-10 p.m. at the park, located at 1000 E. Beltline NE.

A private service for family and invited guests will be held on Wednesday. Meijer spokesman, Frank Guglielmi, told MLive that  live a feed of the service will be provided to the media.

Gugliemi also told Mive there are no plans to close any of the 24 hour Meijer stores to mark Fred's passing:

"Business will continue because that is what Fred would want."

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking memorial contributions be made to Meijer Gardens.
