We're sad to report that Kevin Sikkema, the Georgetown Township firefighter who had his mortgage paid off by the community, has died after a long fight with cancer, according to a Facebook post from his family.

Sikkema was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer in 2014, and since then the community has shown him an outpouring of support.

Most recently, back in January, the community managed, through a GoFundMe campaign, to raise the money needed to pay off Sikkema's mortgage.

35-year-old Sikkema was diagnosed with Glioblastoma, which is a highly aggressive form of brain cancer, in May of 2014. The cancer caused seizures, which caused him to have to cut back to only working one day per week, which put some financial strain on he and his family.

Sikkema was a firefighter in West Michigan for more than 13 years, working with the Georgetown and Blendon Township Fire Departments.

The GoFundMe campaign for the Sikkema family is still active, and has raised over $112,000.

Thursday night, many local fire and police departments came together to honor Sikkema.
