A gin hand-crafted in Grand Rapids has been named the best in the world.

Long Road Distillers' "Michigin" was awarded the honor, along with a "Double Gold" Medal at "The Fifty Best Gins" tasting event in New York last week, MLive reports

The tasting event July 19 dubs itself "the largest in the world".  This year, 18 members of The Fifty Best's spirits judging panel tried 62 gins from around the globe. According to their website, here's how the judging went down:

Strict tasting rules were applied. The order of service was established beforehand by lottery. Each of the gins were poured into fresh glasses from new sealed bottles, and served at slightly above room temperature. Only ice water, neutral unflavored crackers and chips were available to cleanse the palate. The judges tasted through eight flights of 7 gins and one flight of 5 gins. The judges wrote down their impressions of each product on score sheets. The scoring was done on a 5-point system, with 5 as the best. Double-Gold, Gold and Silver medals are awarded according to a set range of final point scores received from the judges. There were no bronze medals awarded for this tasting."

And Long Road's Michigin nabbed a Double Gold Medal! Their Bartender's Blend Gin was also awarded a Double Gold Medal and their Dry Gin won a Gold Medal.

Jon O'Connor, co-owner of Long Road Distillers shared some history about the spirit,

Michigin was long in the making. We had a plan for it even before we opened our doors, but it took us nearly two years to find all of the ingredients for our first batch. Once we discovered the quantity and quality of juniper on Beaver Island that we needed to serve as the primary botanical, we knew we were onto something special."

Michigin is the first all-Michigan Gin, made from 100% local ingredients.

Aside from the juniper from Beaver Island, there's red winter wheat grown by Heffron Farms in Belding, lemon verbena and fennel from Visser Farms near Zeeland, lemon balm from Creation Farms near Beulah, and galena hops from the Michigan Hop Alliance in Northport, MLive reports.
