Gov’t Mule and Tedeschi Trucks Band Whip Up a Soulful Storm at Mountain Jam

The Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gov’t Mule closed out day three of Mountain Jam with a familiar, yet somehow still thrilling pair of performances that featured huge, emotive guitar jams.

The 11-piece Tedeschi Trucks Band is led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks. The source of their collective strength is an uncanny ability to stay in sync whether the music is set to simmer, slow boil, or full-on frenzy. Tedeschi is a celebrated blues singer; Trucks is a slide guitar master who cut his teeth on years of touring with the Allman Brothers Band. Through their set and especially into the finale, ‘The Storm,’ the duo — who also happen to be married — showed they are capable of conjuring up a soul storm with ease.

During a quick backstage chat, the couple suggested we might also hear different kinds of music from them in the future. When asked if they ever considered performing as a stripped-down acoustic duo Trucks said, “We’ve talked about that,” and added that they currently were drawing lots of inspiration from a recent trip to India.

Afterward, Gov’t Mule took the stage for a massive, four-hour set. Singer and bandleader Warren Haynes was instrumental in starting Mountain Jam ten years ago, and the band has played every year since. The long sets and home field atmosphere often lend the shows a looser, experimental feel.

The best of those moments: When Gov’t Mule delivered a surprisingly arresting version of Radiohead’s ‘Creep’ far into the second set, including a pair of solos by Haynes – one disturbed, like quivering water, the other frenetic, as Haynes did perfect justice to Thom Yorke’s obliterating vocal climax. (An encore featuring three Doors covers, ‘People Are Strange,’ ‘Five to One,’ and ‘Break on Through,’ wasn’t as surprising nor as well executed.)

Both Tedeschi and Trucks returned to the stage to sit in with Gov’t Mule – Tedeschi on a perfectly diligent take on Rufus and Chaka Khan’s 1974 smash ‘Tell Me Something Good.’
