The City of Grand Rapids announced today that the Grand Rapids Fire Department has received the highest rating possible due to their "overall efficiency in execution and response of emergency service."

The high rating could lower home insurance premiums.

The Class 1 rating comes from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). It is the highest rating available and the Grand Rapids Fire Department is the first to receive the rating in Michigan.

ISO evaluates more than 50,000 fire departments across the country. 330 have earned the Class 1 rating. Among the 259 accredited fire agencies worldwide, only 71 hold a Class 1 rating.

Most home and business insurance companies use the classification to calculate premiums. The Class 1 rating could mean lower insurance premiums for home and business owners.
