They are starting work on the pier and they are slowly closing off sections...with the first section (the western most 200 feet of the pier) being closed on Monday, August 29th. Over the next nine days, additional sections will be closed off until the entire pier is no longer accessible. It will remain closed for a year.

The pier will be off limits to the public so that crews can begin work on repairing the cracked and worn concrete breakwater. The $2.1 million project is being supervised by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

For the pier to be repaired, the metal catwalk has to be removed. It will be taken down in sections and then the pieces will then be moved off-site for storage.

Will the catwalk return? The Army Corps has funding to replace the pier, however the catwalk is owned by the City of Grand Haven. The catwalk is NOT part of the pier renewal project. In other similar projects, the Army Corps has done away with catwalks. If the City of Grand Haven wishes to keep the catwalk, it must come up with the funding to save and restore the catwalk. If the funds can be raised, the catwalk would be repaired and returned after the repairs to the pier have been made. For more information on making a donation to restore the catwalk, here is the Save the Catwalk website.

Here photos, and additional information, about the first part of the catwalk being removed...provided by the Grand Haven Tribune.
