The newly formed Grand Rapids Football Club is set to kick off this summer. A statement made by the team on Reddit, says that the team is attempting to form a league of Great Lakes area clubs, and in lieu of that, will play an independent schedule against teams from other leagues.

The minor league soccer team didn't get admitted into a nationwide league (NPSL) so they are trying to form a new league with teams in Detroit, Chicago and Milwaukee area to play this summer.

The team's statement says that even without a league affiliation, the team will go on as scheduled:

If for some reason this new league doesn't come through, we have made the decision to play this summer as an independent and attempt to schedule games with PDL, NPSL, and Independent teams from around the Midwest.  We started this campaign to bring a high level team with a fervent atmosphere and fan culture that we could all get behind and that is what we intend to do.  All games will still be played at Houseman Field as planned.
