To say that pro soccer in Grand Rapids has been a success would be an understatement. The fledgling GRFC has already moved up a division in the pro soccer establishment, and now they're planning a big game out at Fifth Third Park.

The GRFC had a huge first season in 2015, averaging close to 5000 fans for their games at Houseman Field, and the upcoming 2016 season means a move up to the National Premier Soccer League. It was announced yesterday that the team will play a match at the minor leage baseball home of the West Michigan Whitecaps, Fifth Third Park.

The friendly with the Aurora Football Club of Toronto will be played October 8 at Fifth Third, with tickets going on sale July 1. The event, billed as 'Futbol At The Ballpark' is a win-win for both clubs, according to GRFC President Matt Roberts.

"We have made it a point to work with the other minor league teams in West Michigan to try to grow the game of soccer and all of our brands,” Roberts told the GR Business Journal.

“We have had a great relationship with the Grand Rapids Griffins and Grand Rapids Drive, and now we will work with the West Michigan Whitecaps to put on a great night of soccer for our supporters and fans that may be new to the sport.”

The GRFC opens up their 2016 season this Friday night, May 6, at Houseman Field in Midtown against Wyoming's Ole SC of the Great Lakes Premier League. Tickets are available on the GRFC web site and at the door.
