A Grand Rapids man has been formally charged in the Feb. 1 off-campus death of a Michigan State University student from Middleville.

Maraquay McCoy, 19, is charged with attacking two men at an East Lansing apartment on Jan. 31, fatally wounding 20-year-old Dominique Nolff.

The incident was over the alleged theft of medical marijuana and a laptop computer, according to East Lansing police.

McCoy was charged Thursday in 54B District Court in East Lansing.

He is facing charges of open murder, two counts armed robbery, felon in possession of a firearm, felony firearm and being a habitual offender – second offense. If convicted of the charges, he faces up to life in prison.

Judge Andrea Larkin denied bond for McCoy, who was released on parole three weeks before the death.
If convicted, McCoy faces life in prison.

McCoy was arraigned via video hook-up from the Kent County Jail in Grand Rapids, where he is serving time for unrelated charges after a standoff with police in Grand Rapids on Feb. 18.

East Lansing police responded to a reported shooting at 8:48 p.m. Jan. 31 at Cedar Village Apartments, located in the 200 block of Cedar Street. When police arrived, they found the two victims with gunshot wounds in the apartment. Both were taken immediately to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing.

The injured were Nolff and a 20-year-old MSU student from Grand Haven.

Nolff died at 9:23 a.m. Feb. 1 from injuries suffered from multiple gunshot wounds. A Thornapple Kellogg High School graduate, he was a sophomore majoring in business.

The Grand Haven man was treated for a single gunshot wound and was released from the hospital the day after the Friday evening incident, authorities said.
