GRPD Offers Trick Or Treaters Candy and Safety Tips For Halloween

So while you're trick or treating this Halloween, make sure you're looking for GRPD officers; they have more candy for you to score!

They Grand Rapids Police Department and Miejer have teamed up to make sure all the officers on patrol will have candy with them.  The officers will also be getting out of their cars during trick or treat times so kids can come up and get some of that delicous loot.

They also have thrown out a few more safety tips to for your kids to keep in mind, as they trick or treat, such as:

• Don’t go alone. Trick or treaters should have an adult with them
• Wear light and reflective clothing so cars can see you.  A lot of cars, especially those of fellow trick or treaters aren’t always paying attention to all the action going on around them.  Make it even easier for them to see you.
• Costume props like swords or wands should be made out of card board rather than wood or metal, so they aren’t mistaken for a weapon… and so you don’t accidently hurt yourself while running around.
• Carry and use a flashlight.
• Use sidewalks, don’t just walk down the street. Also make sure to look both ways before crossing the street.  If you have to walk in the street, walk on the left side facing traffic so you and oncoming cars see what’s happening.
• Avoid masks that restrict vision.  Stairs and cars can be missed when you can’t see where you’re going.
• Houses that are participating in trick or treating should have their porch lights on. If they don’t, then avoid going to that house.
• Don’t go into ANY strangers home, car or anything else… even if offered candy.
• Don’t eat any candy until after parents have had a chance to examine it.
