A lot of people will be headed out on the road this weekend, but did you ever wonder what prompts some people to take long trips? While a vacation is always a good excuse to get behind the wheel, apparently love and family are the driving force behind a lot of people’s time in the car.

According to Enterprise Rent-A-Car’s “How Far Would You Drive?” survey, 42-percent of people say they would drive the farthest to see a love interest, which was by far the biggest motivation for a road trip. Other motivations included attending a wedding, as well as a sporting event, concert or political event.

Family was also pretty important to drivers, with one third of respondents saying they’d be willing to drive five or more hours to attend a family reunion, although only 25-percent said they’d commit the same amount of time for a trip to see their in-laws. Do you blame them?

Other interesting results from the survey:

  • 25% of people would drive over five hours to see their child’s sporting event.
  • College football fans are willing to drive the farthest to see their team, more than 230 miles.
  • 82% of those polled said they’d drive to watch their favorite football team play.
  • Rap/Hip-Hop fans are willing to drive the farthest of music fans for a concert (average of 183 miles), while rock/metal fans would drive 167 miles, country fans 166 miles, and EDM fans only 77 miles (probably because they’re all too high on Molly to drive).
  • 68% of married folks would drive over five hours to see their spouse.
  • 44% of non-married individuals would drive over five hours to see their girlfriend/boyfriend.
  • One-third of respondents would be willing to drive over two hours for a meal at their favorite restaurant.

How far would you be willing to drive for a sporting event? Concert? Have you ever taken a long road trip for any of these things? Was it worth it?

What is the longest you’ve ever driven to see a spouse? Boyfriend/girlfriend? Did they appreciate your commitment? Are you still with that person?

I only hope your road trip doesn't wind up like this one.
