What did you do the last time you saw a snake?

Run? Faint?

A little education can go a long ways towards easing fears of snakes in Michigan.

There are 2,400 species of snakes in the world, but only 18 species are found in Michigan. Some are very distinctive and easy to identify. A few others are similar at first look and take more of a trained eye to identify.

Only one Michigan snake, the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake, is venomous. The Michigan DNR advises that the Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake should be observed from a distance. The DNR also says:

Any bite from Michigan's only venomous species, the Eastern massasauga, should get prompt medical attention.

Conversely, a bite from a non venomous snake can normally be treated as one would a scratch or puncture wound, with ample precaution against infection.

Watch below and learn how to identify some of Michigan's most common snakes and also learn the best way to remove a snake if you should ever find one indoors.
