Its that time of year to get the family out into the woods, but make sure the young ones or beginners have taken their hunter safety course first.

According to WOOD TV, there are hunter safety courses available all across the state just in time for the hunting and trapping seasons to begin.

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources requires first time hunters born on or after January 1, 1960 to successfully complete the hunter safety program before you can obtain a license to hunt.

The DNR has half of the class available online so you can do the book work on your own schedule.

Its a great way for a parent and a child to go over firearm safety, ethics, hunting responsibility, game care, wildlife conservation and identification, survival and first aid. The youth can learn and ask the parent questions along the way and it never hurts for the experienced hunter to get a little refresher along the way.

Once you have completed the online portion of the course, you then pre-register for a required field day that will get you certified to hunt in the state of Michigan.

The online course has testing along the way so its important to try and get through the online portion and right in your field test to keep everything fresh because there will be a final test during the field day you must pass to get certified.

Go out and get those hunter safety cards and lets all get into the woods have a safe hunt and begin a lifetime of memories.
