What police initially thought was a traffic accident on I-96 is now being investigated as a homicide by the Grand Rapids Police Department.

Police were called to eastbound I-96 near Coopersville in the early morning hours Monday after reports of a vehicle fire. By the time they got to the scene, the car was fully engulfed with a deceased victim inside.

Deputies determined it was not a traffic crash, but instead a homicide.

WZZM-13 reports that the victim is a 37-year-old woman who was killed on Grand Rapids' northeast side.

Following the vehicle fire, police stopped a 45-year-old Grand Rapids man walking down a road in the are. The man confessed to getting into an argument with the victim on Emerald Ave. NE, just hours before the fire. He claimed that he killed the victim and then drove her body out to I-96 where he staged the car fire.

The man was taken into custody and is being held at the Kent County Jail.

No names are being released at this time.
