Two people are in custody and Calhoun County detectives are working with several agencies on a multi-state identity theft investigation after the discovery of multiple stolen ID cards and stolen checks during a traffic stop.

The Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office says a vehicle was pulled over Wednesday morning on Jackson Street near Lenon Street in Springfield at around 6:30 am for a traffic violation. During the investigation, deputies discovered several identification cards that did not belong to occupants inside the vehicle. Detectives executed a search warrant and located 19 different identifications from six different states, including Michigan. They also discovered stolen checks from eight different individuals from five counties in the West Michigan region.

A 42-year-old Dowling man, who was on parole for various theft, drugs and weapons charges, along with a 33-year-old Plainwell female, who was on probation for welfare fraud, were arrested and taken to the Calhoun County Jail on several charges related to the stolen items. Their names have not been released.

Authorities have not disclosed any of the names or locations where the stolen ID cards and checks were from as they continue to investigate.
