The web site WalletHub has compiled a list of the best cities in Michigan to raise a family, and two Grand Rapids area communities made the top ten, both suburbs on the East Side.

Michigan. although its economy has been challenged over the years, is still a great place to raise a family. It is among the top states with high concentrations of two parent families, and its outdoor recreational opportunites are limitless.

WalletHub's list of "Top Cities To Raise A Family In Michigan" took a look at four main categories: Fun Family Activities, Affordibility, Education and Socioeconomics when determing the rankings.

The Detroit suburbs and Ann Arbor dominated the Top Ten, but two GR area communities managed to shoehorn themselves in.

Other West Michigan communities faring well included Holland at 17, Allendale at 34, and Jenison at 38.

Grand Rapids tied for first for Most Family Friendly Attractions, while Forest Park was fifth for Highest Median Family Income. East Grand Rapids had top five finishes in Lowest Divorce Rate and Lowest Number of Families Below The Poverty Line.

The City of Grand Rapids wound up 65th overall, scoring lowest in the Affordibilty of Housing category.
