Grand Rapids has become well-known for its level of participation in the arts and community events:  lip dubs, zombie walks, Chinese lantern launches, etc.

Is it time to bring a more permanent interactive piece of art to downtown Grand Rapids?

Yesterday, the Downtown Development Authority of Grand Rapids asked Facebook followers to give their opinion about the possibility of bringing interactive art/communication downtown, possibly in the form of a giant chalk wall.

Reaction was 100% positive.

We've seen similar ideas on display during ArtPrize in the past, including exhibits at major venues such as UICA and the Old Federal Building.

Location and other factors of a possible chalk wall were not discussed and other types of interactive art/communication are certainly possibilities.  But the simplicity of a chalk wall is part of its beauty.

How and if a chalk wall would be monitored for controversial content is another issue to be considered, but I think a privately funded public chalk wall would be a perfect fit for downtown Grand Rapids.

ArtPrize and other events in Grand Rapids have advanced the community wide conversation about the arts, a chalk wall would continue to do more of the same.
