The beef between Elton John and fashion designers Dolce & Gabbana escalated Monday to include the Italian government, which apparently has no other pressing issues.

While lots of celebrities came out in support of Elton John’s decision to boycott Dolce & Gabbana over their comments about same-sex families and babies born thanks to IVF, the Italian government doesn’t actually agree.

In fact, politicians branded John “a Taliban” for his criticism of the superstar designers (who are Italian if you didn’t get it.).

"I'm with Dolce and Gabbana and I applaud their courageous statement, this is freedom of expression," Roberto Formigoni, a senator with the New Centre Right, said. "The campaign launched against the two stylists by Elton John is shameful and intolerable. Elton John is a Taliban, he is using against Dolce and Gabbana the same methods used by the Taliban against (the French satirical magazine) Charlie Hebdo." He went on to say, "The opinions of Dolce and Gabbana are significant because they are both homosexual and they think along the same lines as the majority of Italians. A child needs a mother and a father, full stop.”

John and his husband, David Furnish, became parents to two sons thanks to surrogacy. The singer became outraged after Dolce & Gabbana described in-vitro fertilized children as “synthetic.”

“How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic'. And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF –- a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children," John wrote on Instagram.

And it wasn’t just Formigoni who had a problem with the British music icon.

Carlo Giovanardi, another senator with the New Centre Right, said: "The gay Taliban are trying to boycott Dolce and Gabbana just because they dared to say that ... every child has a right to a mother and a father."

Meanwhile, Elvira Savino, an Italian parliament member who is with Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia party, said John is an intolerant person "who wants to block anyone who thinks differently to him.”

My only question through all of this is: If someone adopts a child and gives that child love, affection, food and shelter, who cares what their sexual orientation is?

Lord knows there's enough children out there who have none of the above.

And can we reach a higher level of dialogue than tweeting insults and talking to each other like 12 year olds? I assume everyone involved in this dispute is an adult, can we have a face to face dialogue so that differences can be hashed out?  Please?
