For 20 years now, the Whitecaps have played a home baseball game early in April. The first game of most sports season is usually an important event. But the baseball opening day is different. Usually because it marks the beginning of spring. Even if its in spirit only. It IS the start of the summer long obsession with the national pasttime.

Even if greedy owners and business suit wearing ball players have tried to crush the game, we still come back to watch. It IS, as Ernie Harwell used to say "a game for America"
