The Grand Rapids City Commission this week began finalizing plans to allow city residents to raise chickens in their backyard. As a cheap skate, I figure if I could have a chicken on my back porch that will kick out about a half dozen eggs a week, it's a win-win situation.

Since we live in an area that has both urban and rural lifestyles in our listening area, a listener called in and taught me about what it's like to own backyard chickens. This is a good thing, people, listen and learn!

The key points I learned about backyard chickens:

* About three chickens will kick out one dozen eggs a week.

* No nasty, loud roosters necessary.

* They're easier to take care of than a cat.

* You don't have to let them in when the weather gets cold. (Although I may do that just because I like having fowl in my living room).
