If you think back to when you were a kid, you probably can remember times when you thought you fooled your parents. But if you ask them later in life if your ruse worked (like coming home stinking of pot and blaming the smell on your friend's broken muffler), they'll tell you they weren't fooled in the slightest, and in fact were laughing at you.
