While 14 million people are expected to take to the skies this Labor Day weekend, that pales in comparison to the amount of folks hitting the highways for a getaway. In fact, get ready for some road rage, because the roadways will be jammed with more cars than we’ve seen in the past six years.

The AAA predicts that 34.7 million Americans will drive at least 50 miles from home this holiday weekend, the highest number since a decline in 2008 due to the recession, and 1.3 percent more than last year.

Usually, when Labor Day weekend falls in August there’s more travel, but lower gas prices are also spurring drivers.  At the beginning of the month, gas prices were at their lowest since 2010.

And overall people seem to be giving themselves permission to spend more.

"This year, Americans are more optimistic about their financial situation," said AAA Chief Operating Officer Marshall L. Doney. "Consumer spending continues to outpace disposable income, indicating that Americans are comfortable using their credit cards to take one last summer vacation this year."

Michigan gas prices continue to drop. According to the latest from michigangasprices.com, Fremont has the cheapest gas in the state at 3.14 a gallon.

Locally, road construction will be tapering off Labor Day weekend, but statewide, there are still some issues, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation web site.

Good thing I'm going about as far as my backyard this weekend.

Are you going on a road trip over Labor Day? If so how do you plan to beat the traffic?
