Pat Summitt, the legendary coach of the University of Tennessee Lady Vols basketball team has died. In her prime, her women's teams at the University of Tennessee drew bigger crowds than the men's teams and won eight NCAA titles.

A statement released by Summitt’s son Tyler says she passed "Peacefully this morning at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most." Summitt was 64-yars-old and had been suffering from early onset dementia, Alzheimer’s type.

At the time of her retirement in 2012, she had more wins than any coach, man or woman, in college basketball history and is one of only four coaches, either gender, to have over one thousand wins. The team won eight NCAA championships under her leadership.

Summitt was also an author, having written three books. Her last “Sum It Up” covered her life including her experience being diagnosed and living with Alzheimer's disease.

Summitt was the face of women’s college sports and helped advance attention to the female athletes especially after Title IX was passed.
