LeVar Burton Starts Kickstarter Campaign to Bring Back ‘Reading Rainbow’ [Video]

Hold up. Stop everything you’re doing. This is important – LeVar Burton wants to resurrect “Reading Rainbow,” and he wants to be as universally available as humanly possibly.

On Wednesday, he launched a Kickstarter campaign, with a goal of raising a million dollars to fund the development of a web version of one of our favorite shows from our childhood.

Shut up and take my money, LeVar Burton. I don’t need to hear anything else.

To call “Reading Rainbow” a “fond childhood memory” would be a complete understatement, at least for me.

I would say that pertains to a lot of people seeing as how 20 years later people people are still excited about it.

Think about it: the point of “Reading Rainbow” was that books are awesome make your life better; that you can go on an adventure just by opening the pages.

“Take a look! It’s in a book!” is way more appealing to the average kid than “We have to do well on these standardized tests so that the school will get more funding.”

Don’t you agree? “Reading Rainbow” made books and learning fun!

Unfortunately, the last new episodes were filmed in 2006, and reruns ended in 2009, leaving kids seemingly “Rainbow”-less.

Realizing that most kids had migrated to the Internet anyway, Burton released a tablet version of “Reading Rainbow.” The tablet version features the field trips you remember Burton going on in the show, but it also allows kids to read books or have actors read to them.

Another issue, though, is that there are kids who don’t have access to tablets. That’s what inspired Burton to develop a web version. There will be a subscription fee for access to “Reading Rainbow” books, but that fee is a lot cheaper than buying an iPad or a tablet.

Burton also wants to create a new version of the program for the classroom that will include resources for teachers. The best part? He wants to provide that for free to the under-funded schools as possible. He says that meeting the $1 million goal should allow them to put the program in 1,500 classrooms completely free of charge.

Need any more reasons to donate to the cause?

How about this: a $50 donation gets you a “Reading Rainbow.” mug (which all of your friends will envy), and $400 will get you a voice-mail message from LeVar Burton.

No word on whether he’s willing to sing the “Reading Rainbow.” theme or repeat lines from “Star Trek.” I don’t recommend asking him to repeat lines from the ABC miniseries “Roots.”

There’s also a $10,000 package where you can take a photo or video while wearing Burton’s visor from Star Trek. (We’ve all dreamed of that, don’t lie.)

For real, we all loved this show when we were kids, and now is our chance to make it available to kids these days. Now, sing the theme song with me, “Butterfly in the sky, I can go twice as high. Take a look. It’s in a book . A Reading Rainbow”
